Gluten Free Dinner Time Made Easy: Getting Kids to Eat Healthy with Gluten-Free Delights
As parents, we all know the struggle of getting our kids to eat healthy meals, especially when dietary restrictions come into play. I have Celiac Disease and I always cook gluten free for the whole family (it is usually healthier anyway and they do get used to it!!) If you're looking for gluten-free meal ideas that will not only nourish your little ones but also excite their taste buds, you've come to the right place! In this blog post, we'll explore some creative and delicious ways to make mealtime a breeze while ensuring your kids enjoy a gluten-free diet.
1. Make Gluten-Free Swaps Exciting:
There are a vast array of gluten-free alternatives available, such as quinoa, rice, corn, and buckwheat. Share mouthwatering recipes that incorporate these grains into kid-friendly dishes like gluten-free pizza, pasta, and tacos.
I have found that I can make any dish my kids love into a gluten free dish. The biggest thing for us has been looking at each item to make sure it is gluten free before you buy it, and not just assume. Depending on the allergy, intolerance or autoimmune disorder you also may need to make sure there is no cross contamination. I will share a couple of my family's favorite easy dinner recipes.
There is a whole world of gluten-free flours that can be used to create scrumptious baked goods, including gluten-free muffins, pancakes, and cookies. I use this one from Amazon.👈 buy it here, you won't regret it!!
2. Sneak in Veggies and Fruits:
Introduce your kids to the wonders of colorful vegetables and fruits. There are creative ways to incorporate them into meals, such as making veggie-packed smoothies, adding grated vegetables to sauces, or creating colorful fruit skewers for snacks.
It is so important to involve kids in the cooking process. Encourage them to choose their favorite vegetables at the grocery store and help prepare meals. This ownership often leads to increased interest and willingness to try new foods. This can take patience, and the ability to let go and embrace some chaos.
3. Get Creative with Presentation:
Kids are more likely to eat foods that look appealing. Something I implement is making meals visually appealing by arranging food into fun shapes or creating colorful, eye-catching salads with a variety of fruits and vegetables. While this can take a little time, (by the way, it does not happen all of the time) it is worth it in the long run. Make it fun and involve everyone.
Involve your children in meal presentation by letting them decorate their own gluten-free pizzas or make funny faces with veggies on their plates. This playful approach can make mealtimes more enjoyable and encourage healthy eating.
4. Plan and Prep Ahead:
Planning meals in advance can save time and reduce stress. Here is one that I use, I make it on Canva and print the PDF (if you want me to make one for you or show you how just message me):
👈Here is our monthly meal plan that includes gluten-free dinner ideas the whole family will love (I will be posting the recipes to each one of these in the near future). It is important to prepare ingredients ahead of time to minimize last-minute chaos. When I do this, I feel so much better about my week, and it is one less thing I have to worry about.
You have the option for batch cooking and freezing some of these gluten-free meals, allowing for quick and convenient options on busy days. Most of these are super quick and easy for those after-work-feed-the-whole-family nights!!
5. Be a Role Model:
Children often mimic their parents' behavior, so it's essential to lead by example. I am always eating gluten free out of necessity, and I am not a restaraunt, so my family has learned to eat what I make. We pride ourselves on always having family dinner together, with a few exceptions here or there. It is a dying practice in todays world but I still believe in the power of family helping and eating together. Some days are more difficult than others, like when our daughter can't stand anyone chewing (or breathing too loudly). Teenagers; am I right!? We
encourage family mealtimes where everyone can enjoy gluten-free dishes together, fostering a positive and supportive environment.
Conclusion:
By implementing these tips and tricks, you can make gluten-free mealtime a breeze while ensuring your kids eat healthy, delicious foods. Remember, patience and persistence are key when introducing new flavors and ingredients. With a little creativity and a lot of love, you'll soon find that gluten-free meals can be both nutritious and enjoyable for the whole family.
We hope these ideas inspire you to embark on a gluten-free culinary adventure with your little ones. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out. Happy cooking and happy eating!
